“What is happiness to you?” We all have heard this question sometime throughout our life. Even the famous movie, “Vanilla Sky”, staring Tom Cruise, centers its entire theme on this topic. There are many forms of happiness that one may encounter on many levels, whether if it is either helping out a fellow colleague or simply doing a certain act of service that gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment. But our world today presents another path to the so-called happiness that we all desire. This is the path that has now evolved around materialistic values and consumerism that has made a large impact on our society. In Harry Crews’ essay “The Car” and James B. Twitchell’s “Two Cheers for Materialism”; we begin to take notice of the reality of materialism and how it is playing a major role in our lives. Many studies have been performed to try and discover an answer to the question on whether material possessions can lead to happiness; it seems that our society continues to fail at making a decision. However, the majority of tests prove that our society does believe that our lives are becoming too materialistic and money doesn’t essentially lead to a form of happiness in one’s life. Introduction
Although kleptomania, the irresistible impulse to steal objects not needed for personal use or for their monetary value, is currently classified in psychiatric nomenclature as an impulse control disorder, research suggests it is, rather, a variant of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The principle effects of the theft are repetitive, unwanted intrusions of thoughts, and an inability to avoid the compulsion to perform the theft, and the relief of tension following the act (Dannon, 2002). Comparison of both disorders, their comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders, and the treatment used to reduce and eliminate symptoms may have a baring on the “correct” classification.
Kleptomania, listed in the DSM-IV as an impulse control disorder not elsewhere classified, is a psychiatric condition still poorly understood and subject of only a few systematic studies (Presta, Marazziti, Dell‘Osso, Pfanner, Pallanti, & Cassano, 2002). Kleptomania is characterized by the persistent impossibility to resist the drive to steal objects. Kleptomania should be distinguished from shoplifting, in which the action is usually well-planned and motivated by need or monetary gain. Often a kleptomaniac steals things he or she could have easily bought or things that are not expensive. The objects stolen are not stolen for their immediate utility or monetary value; on the contrary, the person will most likely discard them, give them away, or collect them. This behavior is usually associated with a sense of satisfaction during and immediately after its accomplished. Stealing is not done to express anger or vengeance nor is it a response to delirium or hallucination (Cardoso, 1997). Euthanasia, a widely disputed practice, is one that should be accepted in our society. Most people today feel afraid of death, or are they are afraid of dying? Everyone knows it will happen eventually, but as Woody Allen put it, “No one wants to be there when it happens.” The questions of how, when, where, and most importantly, for how long, find their way to the surface of our minds. Everyone wants to die painlessly, to insure a good death one must plan for it. People with an incurable illness or injury should have the right to end their life.
Webster’s dictionary definition for Euthanasia is “Act or method of causing death painlessly, so as to end suffering: advocated by some as a way to death with victims of incurable diseases.” This definition can be interpreted several different ways leaving ample room open for debate. Some believe euthanasia is assisted suicide when there is a distinct difference between the two. To distinguish the difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide one must look at the last act, which is the act without which death would not occur. (read full text…)

Is the definition of terrorism impossible to reach? Since we cannot offer a true or correct definition of terrorism. Certainly this is true for many of the objects of social science, and social class for example, which are defined differently according to opposing theories.
Terrorism is not merely a matter of explosives. A bomb thrown against a military target is a horrible thing, and may result in tragedy, but it is not by itself an act of terrorism. Neither is terrorism simply a matter of ideology. The ramming of a police station by a truck loaded with C4 does not become an act of terrorism simply because the explosive was packed by a fanatic’s hands, or the vehicle was driven by a true believer. Again the act is unconscious, and again the consequences may be terrible, but it is not necessarily the work of a terrorist. It is time to remind ourselves, what defines terrorism is the use of violence against the innocent, to achieve political, certain beliefs, or religious ends. The conversion of a commercial airplane into a weapon, the destruction of a crowded office tower, or the parking of a car bomb outside a heavily trafficked restaurant. These are doubtless acts of terrorism, but so is the shooting of entire residential areas, whose only sin is to crowd one house hiding, suspected enemies of the state. (read full text…)

George Berkeley was born in 1685 near Dysert Castle, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, where he was introduced to philosophies of Descartes and Locke. Berkeley’s subjective idealism means all things are constituted by mind and its ideas and things (ideas) depend on perception for their existence. His theory is focused on the citation “to be is to be perceived”. In 1949, John George Haigh was founded to be a serial killer known as The Acid Bath Murderer and The Vampire Killer. Haigh targeted old rich and retired people. His first family of victims were the McSwans. The McSwans family was rich and Haigh wanted to take their wealth. First Haight killed the son Donald McSwan. Then the following year he killed the parents Mr. and Mrs. WD McSwan. He killed them by bludgeoning them to death. (Beating them with a club) After killing them he forged the McSwans name on some transfer deeds, and he was able to get the McSwans properties and 4,000 pounds. When he lost all of the money at the dog track he decided to begin murdering for profit again.
His second group of victims were the Hendersons who where also rich. Haigh began to be their friends and he gained their trust. Haigh drove Mr. Henderson to his workshop where he shot him. Then he went to Mrs. Henderson and told her that her husband was sick. She went with Haigh to see him at his workshop. Once she got there he killed her in the same manner. I’m sure if you were to ask any group of students enrolled in an ordinary public school what is one rule that you most disagree with at your school, at least half of them would mention the dress code. All schools have some kind of dress code in their code of conduct. Although the dress codes at different schools may vary, all students seem to feel the similarly about the idea of dress codes. What students fail to realize and even I as a student in public schools, is that dress codes are put into order not only for presentation, but for their education and safety. Although there are consequences for not abiding to the dress codes, students still remain to disobey and challenge the code. For these reasons uniforms should be enforced at public schools. For several years there have been rumors of uniforms coming to play in public schools, unfortunately these rumors have not amounted to much, but school uniforms in a couple of elementary schools.
