Studies of the family and family life in societies all over the world show that some form of family unit exists in all societies. The need for this is quite obvious in view of the fact that it takes several years after a birth for a human being to grow to a stage where he or she has acquired the necessary skills for survival. Thus the need for a secure environment such as the family unit to ensure the survival of human life.
Over the last 50 years in particular, family life and the way it is organised in different societies has been a very popular area of study for sociologists. Over the last 25 years, global developments have contributed to an increase in organised criminal activity, more than ever before. These global developments include the dramatic advances in transportation systems facilitating organised crime activities, especially the movement of drugs and weapons in and out of countries.
Communication and information systems, too, have been developed to such an extent that organised crime syndicates are able to network their activities to a greater extent than before. Information warfare entails the sabotage of national and global information systems. In this way organised crime moves into the arena of white-collar crime, as financial fraud and embezzlement become added to the list of organised criminal activity. The advancements in information infrastructures also allows organised criminal groups to engage in extortion, their capacity to harm information and communication infrastructures (through hacking) can be used as a potential bargaining tool for extortion or act as a deterrence to inhibit law enforcement successes. Queen Maatkare Hatshepsut, Pharaoh of Egypt during the 18th dynasty, from 1473 BC to 1458 BC, was one of only a handful of female rulers of ancient Egypt. Her story is unique in Egyptian history, and has been the source of many disputes among scholars. Hatshepsut reigned longer than any other female pharaoh. Among the legacies she left behind, none is greater than the mortuary temple she erected at Deir el Bahari in Thebes, the ruins of which still stand in present-day Luxor. The temple, designed by Senenmut, reflects the adjacent mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II, but is much larger. In previous years, most Africans who have came to America were slaves who were purchased through the international slave trade. White colonists viewed Africans as uncivilized and ‘turned to the international slave trade to fill their labor needs.’ The white English settlers knew nothing of any other culture; people were thought to be white or Christian, anything else was ‘uncivilized’. Slavery served for two purposes; a labor system and racial control in a white country.
The slave trade was important in building the colonial empires of European nations and in creating the wealth that later produced the Industrial Revolution. Africans were being Europeanized and at the same time European Americans were being Africanized. Let’s speak about Middle East… When one looks at a situation like that of Hafez Asad passing his presidency onto his son, it would seem extremely difficult in a presidential system, like that of Syria, to transfer rule from father to son. It would make it even more difficult considering that the son, Bashar Asad, does not fulfill many of the qualifications outlined in the constitution. However, somehow Hafez Asad was able to accomplish this transfer of rule to his son Bashar.
Hafez al-Asad had his mind set on paving the way for Bashar to succeed him as president. Many steps were taken and many changes were made by al-Asad to ensure and secure the presidency for his son. This was a fairly smooth transition. Al-Asad began to bring strong supporters of Bashar into the cabinet and appoint them into key positions. Out of the thirty-six possible positions available in the cabinet, twenty-three had been given to these young, loyal supporters of Bashar. Although kleptomania, the irresistible impulse to steal objects not needed for personal use or for their monetary value, is currently classified in psychiatric nomenclature as an impulse control disorder, research suggests it is, rather, a variant of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The principle effects of the theft are repetitive, unwanted intrusions of thoughts, and an inability to avoid the compulsion to perform the theft, and the relief of tension following the act (Dannon, 2002). Comparison of both disorders, their comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders, and the treatment used to reduce and eliminate symptoms may have a baring on the “correct” classification.
Kleptomania, listed in the DSM-IV as an impulse control disorder not elsewhere classified, is a psychiatric condition still poorly understood and subject of only a few systematic studies (Presta, Marazziti, Dell‘Osso, Pfanner, Pallanti, & Cassano, 2002). Kleptomania is characterized by the persistent impossibility to resist the drive to steal objects. Kleptomania should be distinguished from shoplifting, in which the action is usually well-planned and motivated by need or monetary gain. Often a kleptomaniac steals things he or she could have easily bought or things that are not expensive. The objects stolen are not stolen for their immediate utility or monetary value; on the contrary, the person will most likely discard them, give them away, or collect them. This behavior is usually associated with a sense of satisfaction during and immediately after its accomplished. Stealing is not done to express anger or vengeance nor is it a response to delirium or hallucination (Cardoso, 1997). Most patients with this disorder seem to be women; their mean age is about 36 and their mean duration of illness is roughly 16 years. (read full text…)

Is the definition of terrorism impossible to reach? Since we cannot offer a true or correct definition of terrorism. Certainly this is true for many of the objects of social science, and social class for example, which are defined differently according to opposing theories.
Terrorism is not merely a matter of explosives. A bomb thrown against a military target is a horrible thing, and may result in tragedy, but it is not by itself an act of terrorism. Neither is terrorism simply a matter of ideology. The ramming of a police station by a truck loaded with C4 does not become an act of terrorism simply because the explosive was packed by a fanatic’s hands, or the vehicle was driven by a true believer. Again the act is unconscious, and again the consequences may be terrible, but it is not necessarily the work of a terrorist. It is time to remind ourselves, what defines terrorism is the use of violence against the innocent, to achieve political, certain beliefs, or religious ends. The conversion of a commercial airplane into a weapon, the destruction of a crowded office tower, or the parking of a car bomb outside a heavily trafficked restaurant.
